September is Climate Action Month

This September we are going big with a full month of climate action activities for young people to get involved in.

Our Education team will be delivering a series of live lessons, a Q&A for high school pupils, and an all-ages assembly. We'll be hosting a collective climate challenge, story time for younger pupils, interactive lesson for older pupils (in English and Gaelic) and a live Q&A with a climate expert for high schools.

Our full programme for the month is:

Climate Action Month Challenge launch: Tuesday 1 September 11-11.15am

The challenge is for schools and nurseries to choose from a range of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and track their emissions savings by collecting climate action points. All schools who send us their points will have their names read out during our assembly on 29 September and will get access to a resource to make a climate action wristband and you'll be entered into a prize draw.

P4-S2 Lesson in English: Tuesday 8 September 11-11.40am

P4-S2 Lesson in Gaelic: Tuesday 8 September 1.30-2.10pm

Both these lessons will cover transport and climate action. We will explore the problems with fossil fuel powered transport, including climate change, air pollution and noise and look at how we can travel more sustainably (and enjoyably), no matter where pupil’s live or where schools are located. Afterwards, pupils will be invited to create an active travel campaign and submit it to the Young Reporters for the Environment competition.

Early Years-P3 Lesson in English: Tuesday 15 September 11-11.30am

Author and poet Simon Mole shares his book 'I Love My Bike', all about the thrill of learning a new skill and how we can overcome setbacks along the way. He will also help pupils create a poem about their dream bike. Afterwards pupils will be invited to go on sensory walks in their local area to discover the fun they can have when not travelling by car.

Expert Q&A session for High Schools: Tuesday 22 September 11-11.40am

In this Q&A session pupils will have the opportunity to ask questions about climate action and sustainable transport, including what the government is doing to reduce transport emissions and how pupils can help. We will be joined by Rosie Leslie, a senior policy advisor from Transport Scotland, and Stephen Rennie, who works for Urban Fox, who have a contract to install on street electric vehicle chargers in several local authorities in Scotland. Afterwards, pupils will be invited to create an active travel campaign and submit it to the Young Reporters for the Environment competition.

Climate Action Month Assembly in English with Gaelic interpretation: Tuesday 29 September 11-11.30am

In our assembly, we will sum up the learning from the month, reveal our Climate Action Month Challenge points total and find out who has won the prizes. We will also be broadcasting live from a school who will share what they are doing for Climate Action Month.

We're also hosting a challenge for schools to take small actions that will help combat climate change. Each action they take will give them climate action points. At the end of the month they can submit their points total to us to be entered into our prize draw. Full details of the challenge can be found here.

Entries must be submitted by 9.30am on Tuesday 29 September and the winners will be announced at the assembly on the same day.

There are five prizes in total, with the winning schools or nurseries receiving an animal adoption worth £60 from either Scottish Wildlife or WWF and you can choose which animal you adopt! These prizes have kindly been donated by Urban Fox.
