Spring Clean Week 2023
Spring Clean Week 2023
Did you know that spring cleaning is not just a practice related to cleaning homes after long and cold winters, but a tradition linked to some cultures and religions around the world that has been practiced for centuries?
But what does spring cleaning have to do with the environment? Why do we find ourselves needing a Spring Clean Campaign every year? And what would happen if we didn’t?
These lessons and activities are open to all ages, inspiring you and your pupils to take part in our annual Spring Clean Scotland Campaign and join the fight against litter!
We are excited to welcome guests from Play Scotland to these lessons.

Lesson 1: What is Spring Cleaning?
Learn about the history of spring cleaning, what does it mean today and why we need to Spring Clean Scotland every year. How many answers can you guess in our Guess The Cleaning Item game?
Following the lesson, we invite pupils to think, or if possible go for a walk around the school’s grounds or neighbouring area to the school, and choose a place they would like to adopt for at least a week and look after.

Lesson 2: Impact of Litter on Wildlife
Stories, facts and figures about pollution in land and sea. All about how the litter we drop can make its way to the sea, affecting living creatures and causing environmental issues.
Following the lesson, pupils are invited to map the imaginary (but possible) journey that a piece of litter could have between their adopted place and the sea.

Lesson 3: Clean Environment & Happiness
Jenny Lester from Play Scotland joins us to talk about games, the wonders and history of playing, and why we really need to look after our playgrounds and parks.
Following the lesson, pupils are invited to continue to look after their adopted place, cleaning and making it not just good for nature but also for people to enjoy.

Lesson 4: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
What is the real source of litter and why is it getting worse? Understanding the three Rs and the little and big things we can do to help.
