We are grateful to Auchindrain and the SSPCA for helping to deliver this lesson.
Auchindrain was the only farming township to survive the Clearances in its original form. People lived there until the 1960s, and it has been preserved in an authentic condition, providing a unique insight into a way of life now lost forever. The buildings of the township represent a pivotal period in Scotland’s history when many people were forcibly removed from land their families had inhabited for generations. The Scottish SPCA was set up way back in December 1839. Much of the work they do today is different from those early years, but their core mission has never changed – to build a better world for all animals by encouraging kindness and empathy towards them. As Scotland’s animal welfare charity, the Scottish SPCA been on-hand to protect animals and prevent cruelty for 180 years. Find out more on their website.
