National Spring Clean 2007
National Spring Clean, Scotland (1st – 30th April 2008)
2008 Launch - Stirling Castle
An army of almost 20,000 volunteers gathered during April 2008 to wage war on litter across Scotland as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s National Spring Clean campaign. In the second year since the campaign’s revival, volunteers gathered enough black bin bags full of litter to line the Royal Mile in Edinburgh (from the castle esplanade to the Scottish Parliament) 12 times over!

Many groups take part in voluntary clean ups or litter picks throughout the year but National Spring Clean provides an annual focus and opportunity for schools, youth clubs, environmental organisations, voluntary groups, community gatherings, and businesses, to play an important part in a bigger, coordinated campaign.

To find out where spring cleans took place in your area during 2008, please see the map below.

Come back to this website in January to find out how take part in National Spring Clean 2009.

Having a Fun Event
'Keltybridge & Maryburgh Environment Project
National Spring Clean can be a fun way of returning your neighbourhood to its former glory, so why not encourage your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues to take part? Or if you are after an event that is a bit more imaginative, here are a few ideas on how to liven things up a bit:
  • Choose a local landmark or a popular route as the focus of your event;
  • Weigh the amount of rubbish that you collect or count the number of bin bags that you fill to measure the results;
  • Invite a local celebrity, councillor, or MSP along to your event;
  • Ask the local press and radio/TV station to publicise the event, attend the launch and publish the results;
  • Have a themed litter-pick or take part in fancy dress;
  • Organise a litter-pick as part of a team-building exercise for your group or workplace;
  • Get sponsorship so you can raise money for your favourite charity while picking up litter;
  • Invite a local café or pub to contribute refreshments for your volunteers.

Don’t forget to take plenty of photographs of your event, and enter the best ones into our photo competitions. Full details of current competitions are included in the free Clean Up Kits provided by Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Other Clean Ups
If you would like to organise a clean up, but can't wait until April, you can still hold your own litter-pick. To order a free clean up kit at any other time of year, please complete an online Clean Up Kit Order Form.
