St Patrick's Primary School

Working towards their 5th Eco-Schools Scotland Green Flag award, St Patrick’s Primary were a wonderful example of engagement in Eco-Schools activities, encouraging participation across the whole school and community.  Their commitment and innovation in the values of the award won them the title of Best Eco-Schools Committee 2023. We were delighted to invite them to join us for the development of the new Heritage Topic through the Our Heritage, Our Future project with Keep Scotland Beautiful. 

Two in-school sessions were devised by the Our Heritage, Our Future project team in collaboration with senior staff from the school and the school’s teacher with responsibility for the Eco-Committee, then delivered with the pupils.

The Eco-Committee created their action plan with the intention of engaging with and involving the whole school community.  This included teaching and school support staff as well as pupils, parents and carers.  Their aim was to create a cookbook that showcased traditional and modern-day recipes from families in the school community. 

An assembly was held to highlight the project and a call out for information was given to help create the content for the book.  Around thirty-five recipes were submitted ranging from clootie dumplings to Granny Mirian’s Minestrone Soup. 

St Patricks’ have taken on board the information and resources to inspire other schools to be involved with the new Heritage topic. Learning that heritage is all around them and that they have an influence on how it is preserved, recorded and shared with the community have been important to the pupils in understanding the new topic.
