Clackmannanshire Economic Regeneration Trust

Clackmannanshire Economic Regeneration Trust (CERT) is a charitable organisation formed in July 2020 to support the economic and social wellbeing of those who live and work in Clackmannanshire.

Our Heritage, Our Future delivered the Cultural Heritage Skills Training unit Preparing for Heritage Volunteering with CERT. The group were the first to complete this new unit.

The group completed two desk based sessions to gain knowledge and understanding of the wider heritage sector, including terminology and organisations. They discussed the definitions of natural, built and cultural heritage and what skills and qualities can be developed while completing heritage volunteering.

They identified a volunteering opportunity with the Japanese Garden at Cowden and attended practical skills sessions with the Gardening and Outreach and Education teams.

They assisted the Gardening Team at the Japanese Garden to clear debris, care for the trees, shrubs and plants and maintain pathways. They were shown how to create unique Japanese gravel patterns in the decorative dry beds.

The group also joined the Education and Outreach Officer to participate in a Japanese inspired arts and crafts session. They created Japanese inspired lino prints, depicting koi carp and Japanese cherry blossom, which will be displayed in the education cabin.

The group have identified future heritage volunteering opportunities with one group member expressing an interest in becoming a trustee for the Japanese Garden and one member showing an interest in volunteering with the Gardening Team.
