Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust

The Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust (FCCT) formed in 2021 by combining Re-Union Canal Boats and Fountainbridge Canalside Initiative. The Trust works with others to create and manage new projects. It supports and strengthens opportunities for economic, environmental and cultural activity that benefit the community as well as promoting social inclusion, sustainability and well-being. Activities include volunteering, the Canalside Greenspace Group, health walks, community events and heritage projects.

The Fountainbridge Canalside Community Trust was the first organisation to complete the Community Heritage and Climate Action Plan (CHCAP) process with us in 2024. Across a series of workshops, we discussed the heritage which was valued within the community, shared stories and explored the impacts of climate change on heritage.

Utilising the Place Standard Tool - Your Historic Place lens, the community thought about what they like about their place and the opportunities they see to combat climate change and protect the heritage they value. FCCT is now working with a wide range of stakeholders to begin delivering the actions in their plan.

Our activities all focus around the Union Canal in Edinburgh which is a scheduled monument, so our heritage is so important to us. We’ve been working with Keep Scotland Beautiful for about a year to pilot as many activities as we could think of with as many sectors of the community as we could to gather thoughts from people in a creative way. The results of this have helped us to develop our first Community Heritage Climate Action Plan.
