Alva Primary School hosts national climate assembly

29 September 2026

A month of climate action for young people culminated in an all-ages assembly in two languages at Alva Primary School in Clackmannanshire.

We've hosted various activities as part of our Climate Action Month, which ended with an assembly for 39 classes on Tuesday 29 September to tie in with the Scottish Government’s Climate Action Week.

Throughout September schools and nurseries from across the country have enjoyed various online Live Lessons, in both English and Gaelic, focused on the topic of transport.

The lessons have featured guests such as author and poet Simon Mole, Transport Scotland’s Rosie Leslie and Stephen Rennie from Urban Fox. Pupils had the opportunity to ask questions and take part in challenges.

As part of Climate Action Month, schools and nurseries from across the country were invited to work together to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing from a range of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and track emissions savings, five schools were randomly selected to receive a £60 animal adoption pack thanks to Urban Fox.

In total 16 schools and nurseries took part, sharing how their climate friendly behaviours will help Scotland reduce greenhouse gases during Climate Action Month. The chosen schools were:

  • Sgoil Ùige (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar)
  • Craigiebarns Primary School (Dundee City)
  • Buttons and Bows Nursery (Glasgow City)
  • Springfield Primary School (West Lothian)
  • Glenluce Primary School (Dumfries and Galloway)

Andrea Gabriel, our Education Manager, said: “Over the past month we’ve had 3,225 young people take part in our Live Lessons and challenges to celebrate our Climate Action Month.

“It’s been wonderful to see so much commitment and effort from pupils who have taken the time to really engage with our lessons and enjoy our fantastic guest speakers.

“Our lessons support the Scottish Government’s Target 2030 Learning for Sustainability Action Plan and promote climate education for all. Thank you to every young person and educator who has taken part in our activities throughout the past month."

Màiri McAllan, Cabinet Secretary for Education, Culture and Gaelic, added: “I am so pleased to hear of all the activities taking place through Climate Action Schools during Scotland’s Climate Week, and over the past month.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to all those who have taken part. You’re making a real difference in schools and communities across Scotland by learning about climate change and nature loss, and the actions we can take to help.

"By taking action and speaking with your schools, families and local communities, you are helping to create a cleaner, greener future for us all. Keep up the fantastic work!”

Climate Action Month is part of our Climate Action Schools Programme which is a framework of education initiatives funded by the Scottish Government to support Scotland’s educators and young people to progress Learning for Sustainability.
