Robert Burns and the Environment Live Lesson

Robert Burns and the Environment Live Lesson

Every January we learn Robert Burns poems as a celebration of Scottish heritage. But, if we look a little deeper, we can see that through his poems Robert Burns reveals a strong connection to the natural world and the landscape of Scotland.

Join us in the run up to Burns Night for a fun, interactive Live Lesson exploring Burns's appreciation for nature and his desire to protect it.

This lesson is ideal for classes looking to explore Learning for Sustainability in a new way and schools working on the Heritage and Biodiversity Topics for their Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

The lesson will be followed by a challenge to pupils to write their own nature inspired poem.

With thanks to The National Trust for Scotland for their support in developing this lesson.

Lesson

During this lesson, we take a trip to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum to learn about the world that Robert Burns lived in, and how this inspired the deep connection to nature displayed in his poems. We explore how Burns used his creativity to advocate for nature at a time when this was not commonplace.

Following the lesson, we invite pupils to go outside and explore the natural world that is on their doorstep and see what they can find at this time of year. They can then use what they find as inspiration write their own nature poem in Scots or English, just as Robert Burns did.

In addition, have a look at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum website for details on how you can book a school visit to see Burns's cottage in person. While you are there, check out the other amazing National Trust for Scotland properties that you can visit.

Our Garden for Life resources will also be helpful if pupils want to help look after their wee patch of Scotland for nature.
