The National Litter and Flytipping Strategy for Scotland
The National Litter and Flytipping Strategy for Scotland
We're supporting the Scottish Government to deliver the National Litter and Flytipping Strategy for Scotland which was published in June 2023, alongside Zero Waste Scotland and the Scottish Environment Protect Agency (SEPA).
We're committed to collaborating with our partners to drive implementation of the strategy action plans to tackle the litter emergency which we declared in 2022.
The climate, nature and litter emergencies are all interlinked; with unsustainable consumption at the heart of all three - in an effort to make Scotland clean, green and sustainable we understand that we need to inspire behaviour change to improve our environment and the quality of people's lives, their wellbeing and the places that they care for.
Our support of the Action Plan
As a key delivery partner of the Strategy Action Plan, we have been working hard with our partners, funders and communities across the country.
During 2023/24, the first year action plan, we engaged and empowered communities through the development and creation of an online Community Litter Hub, a new litter education programme and testing innovative interventions to tackle littering behaviours and collecting and analysing litter data to support improvements in line with the Data Strategy.
Last year and this year we’ve been building on these actions, continuing to develop and add content to the Community Litter Hub, build on our roadside litter campaign across more areas and continue supporting wider data collection, analysis and improvements in line with the Data Strategy.
You can find out more about our other active work to tackle the litter emergency and how you can get involved here.
Be inspired and play your part in making the litter strategy work for you and for Scotland.

The Community Litter Hub will help inspire you to tackle the litter emergency locally. This valuable resource provides information, advice and support to individuals, community groups and other relevant local organisations on tackling litter and littering behaviour.

We delivered Community Litter Workshops aimed at those new to tackling litter. The Workshops were delivered both in person and online to provide information and access to resources to support individuals and groups to help tackle litter and littering behaviour. While these workshops are no longer being delivered, please email NLFS@keepscotlandbeautiful.org if you wish to discuss options around training in this area.

We have delivered litter related interventions over each year of the National Litter and Flytipping Strategy. You can read our Forth Valley Litter Intervention Report, which focused on litter related food and drink on the go.
In year two, we completed a Roadside Litter Intervention in the Perth and Kinross area focused on raising awareness and reducing litter generated by vehicle drives on and around the A9. You can read the full Roadside Litter Intervention Report, or read a summary from our News Story summarising our March 2025 Roadside Litter Summit.
In October 2025 we launched three local campaigns to tackle roadside litter and more information can be found on our campaign pages.
