Summerhill Community Centre, Dumfries
Summerhill Community Centre is a registered charity in Dumfries with a community learning and development commitment to improve conditions of life and relief of poverty for all ages in the wider community. Opportunities include personal development in education, recreation, sport, health and wellbeing, social gatherings and environmental activities.
We first met the centre through our It's Your Neighbourhood initiative which is part of our Climate Nature Friendly Communities Network. Volunteers had been busy transforming some land adjacent to the centre into a community garden. With a strong ethos of 'love the area you live in' they then turned their focus to celebrating their heritage in Dumfries by joining forces with our Our Heritage, Our Future team.
During summer 2025 we hosted Tell us about your heritage workshops to explore built, cultural and natural heritage in Dumfries. It was a great opportunity for members of the public and community groups to let us know what Dumfries heritage is important to them and how we can provide future support to highlight all that Dumfries has to offer. We were delighted to work alongside existing heritage groups including The People's Project, Dumfries Museum, The Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust, Shambellie House, and SCAMP - Landscape Connections.

We will continue to work with the centre to explore, record and protect Dumfries heritage by providing our Climate Change Impacts on Heritage training and creating a Community Heritage Climate Action Plan.
