Zine to launch celebrating Gaelic language
24 February 2026
A zine of Gaelic material is set to be released to celebrate World Gaelic Week.
Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful is marking the week, which begins on 23 February, by releasing Iris do Luchd-ionnsachaidh (Zine for Gaelic Learners).
The zine is a compilation of stories and insights provided by adults from around the world who are passionate about Gaelic and learning the language.
Material has been provided by individuals of all ages from across the world, including the UK, Canada, the USA, Malta, Cyprus and Japan and shows a collective passion for the language, which is demonstrated in this zine across multiple demographics.
The zine launch is supported by Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Our Heritage, Our Future project, and continues the work the charity is doing to promote the Gaelic language as a core element of our cultural heritage in Scotland, following on from several events which took place at An Lòchran in Glasgow, where the zine will be launched.
Jonathan Angell, our Education and Learning Officer (Gaelic), said: “Gaelic offers a unique world view embedded in culture, heritage and language. It is imperative that we seek ways to promote and sustain its use in everyday life.
“This zine presented an opportunity for Gaelic speakers to have their work, thoughts and ideas preserved, and offers people from all over the world with an interest in the language the chance to enjoy it.
“World Gaelic Week is a brilliant reminder of the enthusiasm and vigour shown by so many individuals when it comes to Gaelic. We must ensure this wonderful language lives on in Scotland and around the globe. The theme for this year, “use it or lose it”, is fitting and we hope this zine will encourage other writers, readers and speakers to continue celebrating Scottish Gaelic."
Isla Parker, Gaelic Officer at The University of Edinburgh, said: “We were delighted to work with Keep Scotland Beautiful on this project. With online classes and resources, it is now possible to learn Gaelic no matter where you are. We hope that this Zine for Gaelic Learners will be a source of encouragement and inspiration for those learning the language across the world.”
Moira Piazzoli, Community Officer at An Lòchran, said: “An Lòchran is delighted to extend a warm welcome to KSB as they launch a magazine for learners. The magazine is full of love for the language, and we hope it will inspire those who make the effort to use Gaelic and build it into their lives.”
Our Heritage, Our Future, and this zine, are made possible with funding from Historic Environment Scotland and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.
