Young people work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and win prizes
01 October 2025
Pupils from primary schools across Scotland have won prizes by working together to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions as part of their contribution to 2025 Scotland's Climate Week.
We invited schools and nurseries from across Scotland to work together with pupils, their families, and the wider school community to choose from a range of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and track emissions savings in the form of ‘Climate Action Points’.
Actions to attain points included reducing energy waste, swapping to meat free meals, reducing food waste, engaging in active travel, using public transport, and swapping or repairing rather than buying new.
The aim was to achieve 2,030 Climate Action Points to match the year when we should be achieving the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and all Scottish schools should be sustainable settings (Target 2030). In fact, the pupils and their teachers more than doubled that achieving almost 5,000 points.
The winners of the challenge were:
Early years – Primary 3
- Dalry Primary School, City of Edinburgh
- Troqueer Primary School, Dumfries and Galloway
- Lasswade Primary School, Midlothian
Primary 4 – S2
- Bonnybridge Primary School, Falkirk
- Houston Primary School, Renfrewshire
- Duncan Forbes Primary School, Highland
The winners of the Early years – Primary 3 category have received £200 to spend online at Muddy Faces and the winners in the Primary 4 – S2 category have received £200 worth of renewable energy science education kits. The prizes for this year were sponsored by ScottishPower.
