Eco-Schools challenges winners announced
13 June 2025
The winners of our Eco-Schools anniversary celebration challenges have been announced.
We've been celebrating the incredible impact of Eco-Schools over the past three decades with a series of challenges throughout the school year.
There were three challenges for schools to take part in: a collage challenge, a bingo challenge and a tartan challenge. Each challenge had prizes for the winners, ranging from gift cards to litter picking equipment. The winners were announced online during the Eco-Schools celebration week (9-13 June).
The collage design challenge was won by Dalry Primary School, Newton Primary School and Cramond Primary School, who all received a £100 voucher from Muddy Faces Ltd. to purchase anything from their catalogue.
Schools and nurseries were challenged to create a collage of some of the Eco-Schools actions and activities that they have taken part in since 1994. It didn’t matter how long schools had been involved in Eco-Schools, we wanted to see and share all the amazing things they have done to help our environment.
The bingo challenge was won by Tongue Primary School, with second place going to Duncan Forbes Primary School and third place to Eaglesfield Primary School.
First place recieved a Handicart Pro and a box of five litter pickers, second place received a Handicart Duo and a box of five litter pickers, and third placer won a Handicart LITE and a box of fiver litter pickers, all from Helping Hand Environmental.
Schools and nurseries were challenged to complete as many of our bingo activities as they could. They had to complete at least four challenges to enter the competition and three winning entries were randomly selected.
The tartan challenge's nursery category was won by Dollar Nursery and the primary school category was won by St Patrick's Primary School. They both received £200 from HP towards their future Eco-Schools activities.
High Blantyre Primary School and St Andrews Primary School were both highly commended and each received £100 from HP.
Schools and nurseries were challenged to create their own tartan inspired by the story behind the recently unveiled Scottish International Eco-Schools Planet Earth Tartan, using their local heritage to help create their tartan design.
Andrea Gabriel, our Education and Learning Manager, said: “Throughout the last few months we’ve had so much fun celebrating 30 years of Eco-Schools, with visits to some of our amazing schools and now this set of challenges.
“It’s been so inspiring to see their creativity and love for Eco-Schools and it wasn’t easy to select a winner.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and congratulations to our winners. We’re so passionate about environmental education and it is so inspiring to see that passion is shared by young people and educators across Scotland.”
This year we are celebrating 30 years of Eco-Schools and Young Reporters for the Environment, with visits to schools across the country.
The Climate Action Schools programme, funded by the Scottish Government, provides a positive driver and demonstrator for schools towards achieving Target 2030.
