Free activities upcoming to engage with Dumfries’ heritage
11 July 2025
A series of activities will take place in Dumfries over the summer holidays to encourage people to engage with the built, natural and cultural heritage of the area.
We're running the sessions as part of the Our Heritage, Our Future programme, in partnership with Summerhill Community Centre.
Each session will have input from a different partner, including Solway Coast and Marine Project (SCAMP), Shambellie House, Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust and Dumfries Museum (subject to change).
The sessions, which are drop-in, are free to attend and will take place in Loreburne Shopping Centre on the High Street. There are five sessions available with each exploring a different theme. People are welcome to attend as many, or as few, sessions as they wish.
Taking place on Wednesdays between 11am-1pm, the sessions are:
- 16 July – Exploring what heritage means to you
- 23 July – Exploring the built heritage of Dumfries
- 30 July – Exploring the cultural heritage of Dumfries
- 6 August – Exploring the natural heritage of Dumfries
- 13 August – Create your object to showcase the heritage of Dumfries
Katie O’Donnell, our Communities Manager, said: “One of Our Heritage, Our Future’s main objectives is to increase people’s understanding of and engagement with Scotland’s historic environment.
“These sessions will provide a brilliant opportunity for people of Dumfries to learn more about the area’s heritage and what it means to them.
“They will also support the community to explore, record and protect their heritage through a range of fun and practical activities.
“We have some fantastic groups and partners lined up for these sessions and I strongly encourage people with ties to Dumfries to come along and get involved.”
Our Heritage, Our Future is made possible with Historic Environment Scotland and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.
The project supports the ambitions of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, with a focus on Quality Education, Gender Equality and Sustainable Cities and Communities.
