Get ready to embrace Borrow Cup in Glasgow

29 January 2025

With almost 400million single-use beverage cups used every year in Scotland, and them making up more than 30% of drinks waste in street bins we know that more needs to be done to make it easy for people to do the right thing and tackle our disposable culture.

We’re proud to have played a part bringing the Borrow Cup returnable cup scheme to Glasgow – aiming to save 100,000 cups in just 12 weeks.  Borrow Cup is big. And it’s the first time in the UK that multiple major brands and local cafés have come together like this to create an expansive, accessible network for returnable cups.

Led by Hubbub and reuse start-up Reposit the Borrow Cup initiative has been launched at more than 40 locations, including Costa, Caffe Nero, Burger King  and local cafes such as  Tinderbox, Sprigg, Plant Blonde and Encore.    You can check out the map of growing participants here.

Emma Glencross, our Campaigns and Interventions Senior Officer  commented, “Since launching Glasgow Cup Movement six years ago, we’ve played a key part in raising awareness of the issues around single-use cups in Scotland, taking action to provide options through encouraging the move towards reuse and recycling while highlighting the issues around litter and waste from single-use packaging including single use cups.

“We were pleased to be invited to get involved in the development of Borrow Cup and I’ve been out co-delivering training for the participating brands with Reposit, taking learnings we have from our work on the Highland Cup Movement. Now Borrow Cups has been launched, I’ll be on the ground in Glasgow each week for the first 12 week phase visiting stores and providing information, guidance and support to staff and customers.

“It has been inspiring working together with all the collaborators on this project and we look forward to seeing how things go, learning from the shared experience and making the case further for investment or any potential charge on single-use beverage cups being invested into systems and infrastructure that make it easier for customers  to #ChooseToReuse and for retailers to reduce their reliance on single-use and make the switch to reusable or returnable models."

So, if you are in Glasgow – do get involved.
