IPCC Publishes Climate Change Assessment Report

The United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) this week published a number of documents relating to its final Synthesis Report for the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) including a Summary for Policymakers along with the Figures from the Summary. The full report is expected to be available later this week, with the full volume shortly thereafter.

The report reiterates that climate change is a threat to human wellbeing and planetary health, and that the window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all is rapidly closing. It also contains a stark warning on the pace and scale of climate action, and that adverse impacts from human-induced change will only intensify without deep, rapid and sustained reductions to greenhouse gas emissions.

Whilst the climate time-bomb continues to tick down, the report does highlight that we have the knowledge and resources needed to combat the climate crisis, with ‘feasible, effective, and low-cost options already available’. Action on climate change also provides a range of co-benefits including to human health and wellbeing along with wider positive planetary and environmental benefits such as improved air and water quality.
