Young Reporters for the Environment is an international environmental journalism competition. 43 countries are participating with nearly half a million young reporters worldwide. And over 13,000 educators too.
The competition is open to young people aged 11 to 25. You can participate on your own or through your school, college, or youth group. All entries go to the Scottish competition. And winners of the Scottish competition are sent to an international competition. Share your views and connect with young reporters around the world. No expensive equipment is needed just use your mobile phone!
Start by identifying a local issue. Conduct original research and identify a possible solution. Next report on the issue and possible solution through an article, photo or video. Then share your work through different channels or at local events.
Any environmental issue fits Young Reporters, but the focus is generally on three themes: Climate Action, Biodiversity Loss and Pollution. You'll also make links to one of the Sustainable Development Goals.
There are lots of resources to help you. Lesson plans on Climate Action, Biodiversity and Pollution. Workshop resources on confident public speaking. Guides to conducting interviews and debunking misinformation online. And campaigns including Litter Less Plus. Videos on effective writing, photography and videography. And FEE Academy courses on environmental journalism. There's also the YRE Hub where you can post stories and connect with other Young Reporters.
There are four categories. Written Article, International collaboration where you can work with a school in another country, Video and Photography. Reportage means you're reporting on an issue that's happening now. Campaign means you're reporting on a project that is being done.
Your entry can be in any language as long as it has English translation or subtitles. You must use your own music or some that is copyright free. Send in your entry by email along with an entry form. You can enter as many times as you like! Register as a Group, as a Club, a School, or just by yourself.
