Project: The Litter Rotator

Primary 5 undertook a litter pick in the local area, beside the River Clyde, to establish how much litter there was. After completing the litter pick and analysing their results, The Fast Cheetahs decided to design a product that would collect rubbish from the water. The class chose their own groups to work in to complete the project. The Fast Cheetahs formed themselves with a mix of children.

The group worked collaboratively to complete the task. Lots of discussions were had about their design and how it would actually work. After the initial discussions they then started to build their prototype. Their design was to include a rotary blade that would move around the sea and collect rubbish. There would be a battery operated sensor attached to the blade which would allow any fish or sea animals to be released if they had been captured in the device.

As a way of stopping litter they will firstly stop dropping litter and encourage their friends and family to do the same. Unfortunately they could not test their device due to the materials it was made from. There was the fear that it would disintegrate if added to the water. We hope that when we go back to our local area there will be less litter and the place will look a lot nicer.

We had great fun working on this project and feel proud that we managed to work together as a team.
