History

Brora is a small village that, at one time, was a busy industrial powerhouse of the North Scotland. In the past, there has been boat building factories, coal mine, fish curing stations, food industrial units and wool mill. Coal mining in the area dates to the 1500s, the pits were closed in 1974. Because of the easy access to coal, Brora also produced lots of salt. The coal was burnt under a pan of sea water to evaporate the water to leave salt. The salt was used to support the herring boom across the coast of Scotland. There was a heavily used stone quarry which was used to build the London Bridge, Liverpool Cathedral and Dunrobin Castle.

Brora was the first place in the north of Scotland to have electricity because of its important wool industry, and gave Brora a brief nickname of the “Electric City”.

There was a Brora distillery that was opened from 1819 until 1983. It produced several different whiskies whilst in operation. The old distillery is still standing, although sadly not in operation.

Natural Space

Brora beach is situated on the impressive east coast of Scotland. The small village neighbouring the beach is home to a perfectly situated golf course, that has an impeccable view of the sea. The rural, unspoilt beach has golden sand and impressive rocks that slope against the sea front. There is plenty of wildlife that you can see in the area, you can often see dolphins, Minke whales and seals from the coastline. 

Setting

Brora beach is situated on the east coast of Scotland 57 miles (92km) from Inverness up the A9 and 53 miles (85km) to the tip of Scotland, Thurso. Nearby is a golf course and the opening of the River Brora.

Getting There

Take the road towards golf course for approx. 1/2 mile. There is free parking in Golf Club Car Park. Rail link to Brora station. Bus via City Link and Stagecoach.
