In the 1850s, Aberdour was popular with pleasure boats coming over from Leith, this gave demand for more hotels and tourist spots to be build. Since, Aberdour has greatly expanded.Aberdour castle lies in the centre of Aberdour. The castle originated from a modest house in the 13th century. Since then, the Earls of Morton have added parts to it in a Renaissance style. During the 17th century there was a fire in the castle and it was left by the family to ruin. Next to the castle there is St Fillan’s Church, this is a very well preserved parish from the 12th century. The church is said to be the site where Robert the Bruce gave thanks for his Bannockburn victory in 1314.
