Free Carbon Literacy Training for people living in the Highland region

02 September 2025

People across the Highland region are invited to attend a free in-person day of Carbon Literacy Training at the Merkinch Community Centre in Inverness on 9 September.

Developed with Circular Communities Scotland, the session will explore the relationship between circular economy, consumption and climate change and highlight positive actions you can take to reduce consumption and help Scotland move towards a more Circular Economy.

The day will also provide you with an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities as well as the motivation and ability to combat climate change yourself. And as the training is fully accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, participants will have the opportunity to apply to be certified as Carbon Literate, by completing a post-course assessment.

Anyone who is aged 18+ and lives in the Highland region, or has links to the area, is encouraged to attend – joining almost 140,000 people across the globe who have been accredited as Carbon Literate.

The training has been funded by The National Lottery Climate Action Fund as part of the legacy of the charity’s Highland Community Waste Partnership which brought together eight community groups in the Highlands to reduce waste and promote more sustainable consumption.

Katie Murray, our Development Manager, Environment and Place Services, said: “We’re so excited to be hosting this day of Carbon Literacy Training for people in the Highland Region.

“Over the years we have had fantastic engagement from the area for our projects which tackle climate change and consumption, from the Highland Cup Movement to the Highland Community Waste Partnership.

“Now we’re pleased to offer this free training for people who want to take positive actions on climate change. We’ve taken inspiration from local community-led projects to highlight action already having an impact in your community and across the Highlands and look forward to sharing it with delegates.”

The course includes the in-person training session in Inverness and an optional post-course Carbon Literacy Assessment which takes place via online self-study. There will also be an introductory workshop at the same location on 19 September, beginning at 1pm and taking 2.5 hours.

Registration for both events is required. Sign up now.

The Highland Community Waste Partnership was a three-year project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, and worked on three key areas of waste reduction, share and repair, and packaging and single-use. Read more in the report.
