Natural Scotland Week - Live Lessons reach thousands across Scotland
19 May 2025
Focusing on the importance of all living things and their interdependency we ran a week of online Live Lessons (12-16 May) reaching 2,750 educators and pupils.
With lessons linked to the curriculum we welcomed guest speakers from Buglife, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and NatureScot. All linked to the activity of the week - making a place for nature. The pupils and educators joining the online Live Lessons learnt about the importance of little known and unloved creatures, the wonderful world of moss, about the work of the Scottish Plant Recovery team, and the importance of wildlife corridors to help wildlife move around to find food, water and shelter as well as expand their populations.
With 110 classes joining Live Lessons over the week, we also widen our audience by including a highly interactive lesson on how ecosystems function in Gaelic thanks to our Gaelic education officer Jonathan.
We also worked with storyteller and author Alison Galbraith, to deliver a session based on the traditional Estonian folk story of Mikku and the trees helping them feel more connected to the amazing natural world. As part of this lesson pupils were invited to design and create a 'nature guardian' - with the winner being announced at the end of the month.
Andrea Gabriel, our Education and Learning Manager commented, “Our natural world is so amazing, and it was brilliant to share some of the wonder with pupils from xx schools during the week of online live lessons. My thanks to those partner organisations who delivered such inspiring lessons and contributed to the development of classroom activities and teaching notes. Our Live Lessons form part of our Climate Action Schools programme, funded by the Scottish Government, and are a positive driver and demonstrator for schools towards achieving Target 2030. You can watch the Live Lessons again on our website and find out more about what we have planned for next term too.”
We’ll be announcing winners of the challenges issued at the end of the month, so do check back in.
