Highland Community Waste Partnership celebrated in final report

26 June 2025

The far-reaching and long-lasting impact of the Highland Community Waste Partnership has been captured in our latest report.

After three years of funded project activity came to an end back in March, we've been writing our report to summarise the enormous impact this partnership has had on the Highlands.

Back in April 2022 the project, coordinated by Keep Scotland Beautiful, brought together eight community groups to reduce waste and promote more sustainable consumption.

Funded by The National Lottery Climate Action Fund, together we addressed three key areas of waste reduction: food waste and composting, share and repair, and packaging and single-use.

Some of the partnership's many achievements include:

  • 831,738 people reached throughout the partnership
  • 948 items repaired
  • 508 items upcycled
  • 740 workshops and events delivered to more than 10,000 people
  • 53 young people completing Climate Emergency Training around waste and consumption

Georgina Massouraki, Highland Community Waste Partnership Coordinator, said: "These past three years have not only been inspiring and impactful but they've also been a lot of fun.

"Alongside our amazing partners we have shown that long-term, community-based climate action projects are valuable and vital for creating meaningful impact and learning what works.

"Projects like this have real impact, not only within the communities they directly affect but also as part of Scotland's transition towards net zero and a more circular economy.

"This partnership has also further strengthened what we already knew: the desire for initiatives like this is there and this needs to be prioritised - and funded, long-term - to ensure that this desire is matched and ambitions are met on a larger scale."
