Ullapool Re-love Clothing Fair benefits people and planet

07 July 2023

Ullapool Village Hall was the venue for a successful event for people to buy and sell pre-loved clothing – helping to re-use items and keep them out of landfill.

The Ullapool Re-love Clothing Fair took place on the evening of 22 June and was organised by Lochbroom and Ullapool Community Trust - part of the Highland Community Waste Partnership and Ullapool Unpacked C.I.C. (a social enterprise and refill shop).

The in-person sale proved convenient for locals, and it removed the need for packaging and posting items from online sales - reducing the carbon footprint of buying second-hand.

Ullapool Village Hall was setup like a boutique for people to come along and browse, creating a lovely shopping experience.

There was fantastic feedback from attendees, with the ambience and practicality of the event praised, as well as additional attractions such as the mending table, opportunities to socialise - and the baking!

43 sellers took part in the event and £640 in sales was generated. More than 80 items of high-quality clothes found a new home, including brand new and barely worn items!

Catriona Scott from Lochbroom and Ullapool Community Trust said:

“The evening was a great success, and we plan to hold another clothing fair soon. Keep an eye on our social media channels for details of the next event & say no to fast fashion!”

Georgina Massouraki, our Highland Community Waste Partnership Co-ordinator said:

“It's fantastic that people from across Ullapool showed so much enthusiasm in prolonging the life of their unwanted clothes, and making some money at the same time.

Creating new clothes produces climate-change-causing greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental damage from water consumption, textile waste and use of chemicals - so re-use events like this are a win for people and planet.”
