Brand New Year, Brand New You...

01 January 2023

It’s a brand-new year and some of us are making resolutions, plans and goals for the year ahead. We’ve got some simple suggestions to help you take environmental action in 2023 to keep Scotland beautiful.

Become Carbon Literate

Make it your New Years Resolution to become Carbon Literate in 2023. Our training helps people and organisations understand the climate emergency and respond to the risks, opportunities and responsibilities ahead. As the official partner in Scotland for the award-winning Carbon Literacy Project, we can help you better understand the climate emergency and what practical action you and/or your organisation can take to minimise its impact on the environment. Find out more about our Climate Emergency training courses.

Help clean up Scotland

There are a number of ways we can all take small steps to #CleanUpScotland. A New Year Resolution could include…

Joining our Spring Clean 2023.

Whether you are an individual, member of a community or a school, make it your New Years Resolution to sign up for Spring Clean 2023 which takes place 17 March to 17 April. You can take action by organising a litter pick, joining a litter pick, or nominating someone for our Clean Up Scotland Hero award.

Become a Citizen Scientist

Do you notice litter and waste when you are out and about? Do you want to do something about it? Make Citizen Science your New Years Resolution. Whether it is our Upstream Battle or Clean Up Scotland campaigns, you can get involved with three simple steps: identify a suitable area, record the litter, share what you find.

LitterLotto

Download the behaviour change app and be in with a chance of winning £500 for binning your litter, a good way to start 2023!

Make sustainable choices

An easy New Years Resolution is to commit to using a reusable cup and to decrease your use of single-use items. Find out more and get involved in our Highland Cup Movement reusable cup scheme linked to the iconic NC500.

Check out and get involved in our Highland Community Waste Partnership to find out how you can use and waste less. We are working across the following key areas of waste reduction: Food waste and composting, share and repair, packaging and single-use.

Learn through Live Lessons

Our Live Lessons are a great way for young people and adults to learn more about the climate, nature and litter emergencies and how to take action. Why not make it your new years resolution to sign up for each Live Lesson in 2023?

And while you’re signing up for future Live Lessons, why not catch up on past ones?

Join the It’s Your Neighbourhood network

It’s Your Neighbourhood is our community environment improvement initiative which we manage in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) under the Britain in Bloom campaign. It is non-competitive and based on the three pillars of community participation, environmental responsibility and gardening achievement. Join hundreds of other groups and share experiences - the perfect way to add to the community spirit and keep Scotland beautiful.
