First Youth Climate Advocate is certified Carbon Literate
19 April 2023
The Highland Community Waste Partnership is celebrating our first Youth Climate Advocate to receive formal certification from the Carbon Literacy Project (CLP).
Ciara Bow (23), from Ardgay, has completed the certified Climate Emergency Training course delivered by Keep Scotland Beautiful as part of the Highland Community Waste Partnership and our Youth Climate Advocates programme.
This programme was developed as part of the Partnership’s work to raise awareness around unsustainable consumption and aims to educate, empower and enable young people to take action in their community.
As part of her certification, Ciara has pledged to grow more of her own food, in a second-hand greenhouse to boot!
Ciara said: “I am delighted to become certified Carbon Literate and the first official Youth Climate Advocate for the Highland Community Waste Partnership. I was extremely fortunate to receive training from their very knowledgeable trainer, who's passion and enthusiasm was contagious.
I feel so much better informed about the climate emergency and the steps that we, as a society, need to take to achieve Net-Zero.
"We all have a responsibility to reduce our carbon emissions in our personal lives, communities and workplaces. The pledges I made as part of the YCA training have encouraged me to take action myself. By growing more of my own vegetables I can reduce the amount of packaging and other resources used in food production and work on reducing my food waste.
"I am really looking forward to getting involved with the learning and volunteering opportunities on offer through Highland Community Waste Partnership events.”
Ciara is the director of Gledfield Distillery and 2022 winner of the UHI Inverness Business Competition.
Anyone aged 11-24 and living in the Highlands can become a Youth Climate Advocate by completing Climate Emergency Training with the Highland Community Waste Partnership. CLP certification is optional.
Once trained, Youth Climate Advocates will have access to further opportunities with the Partnership to learn and take action in their community. They will also form part of a Highland-wide network of young people, who can make connections and share experiences with their peers.
Sign up to the next online training course (May 2nd, 9th & 16th) via Eventbrite or visit the Youth Climate Advocates website to find out more.
