Volunteer Gardeners at National Mining Museum Scotland

The volunteer gardening group at National Mining Museum Scotland, with participants aged 18 to 90, have transformed the grounds through sustainable and creative work. They’ve rejuvenated the Beechgrove Garden, using upcycled materials from the Pit and plants sourced through donation or propagation. Their recent focus on biodiversity includes building a deadhedge, birch fencing, and creating habitats for insects. Collaborating with a local school, they’ve planted potatoes and beans, and are planning a sensory garden with a local voluntary mental health group. They've also built new pathways and educational signage using recycled slate, fostering community engagement and environmental awareness across the museum grounds.
