St Pius Primary School - Before and After

Project Title:Before and After

We conducted our investigation by doing a massive litter pick at the Dighty Burn in Dundee and within our playground. The class focused on Marine litter and pollution, looking at the effect of litter in our school grounds. We measured the problem using surveys from both litter picks at school and at the burn and compared them.

The way litter can get from our school to the sea is by the wind and the litter can get into the drains. In our investigation the most common litter that we found were chocolate bar wrappers, crisp packets and empty plastic bottles. These are commonly used items coming from people that are not putting their litter in the bin.

To tackle the problem we could get more bins in our school and community and put up posters. The actions that we will take to stop marine litter are litter picks and raising awareness that littering is not cool. Negative changes in our school and community have happened due to litter, for example there is rubbish all over our parks and animals such as birds in are school playground have been hurt. The way our project is raising awareness is by showing people in our school and community what our seas used to look like and what they look like right now.
