Royal School of Dunkeld

Project title: Can Dolphin

We did a litter pick and weighed the litter. We then organised an assembly and explained to the school about how out litter can end up in the River Tay. Having watched a Keep Scotland Beautiful video, we compared the quantities of litter that we collected to the amount that litter pickers in the Tay had picked up.

We realised that litter dropped in our school could easily be carried to the River on the wind.  We looked at the path of the River and tracked it from Dunkeld, through Perth and Dundee to the sea beyond. We realised that once in the sea, it could go anywhere.

We organised a school-wide competition to design plastic collection bins for our classes. We then started to  collect snack wrappers from the children when they line up, so that the plastic can be sorted and sent for recycling.

We will continue to collect our plastics for recycling and we are taking part in the big plastic count to reinforce this. We will organise a community litter pick closer to the river next term.

Pupils created a sculpture of a dolphin using aluminium cans and plastic bags.
