Source to Sea Action
Source to Sea Week of Action will take place between 8-15 September.
Help us tackle marine litter from source.
80% of all marine litter comes from land, where litter is washed into gutters, blown into streams or carelessly discarded. This means that litter in our streets and parks is not only costly to clean up but is a threat to the marine environment.
That's why we need to take #Source2Sea Action. We’re encouraging everyone to take action along a waterway near them to prevent litter ending up in the sea.
Here's how you can get involved:
Seven Daily Actions
Help us tackle marine litter at source by participating in our seven Daily Actions competition. Each completed action will count as an entry to win a £150 voucher. There are plenty of actions you can take so get involved and help us protect our waterways.

Litter Pick and Litter Survey
Organise a litter pick in your local area or complete a litter survey to help gather valuable data on litter in your local area. Get in touch with a local Community Clean Up Hub or Anchor Group to borrow litter picking equipment. You can add your event to the Clean Up Scotland map (shown below) to promote it and encourage others to join.
Online Activities
You can raise awareness with your online network by sharing our Source to Sea social media cards (available to download below). Spread the word and help us encourage more activity to prevent litter ending up in our seas by using the hashtags #Source2Sea and #UpstreamBattle and tagging the Keep Scotland Beautiful account. Follow the daily actions posted online on our Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Activities for Children and Young People
Download the Upstream Battle activity sheet that includes a wordsearch, colouring our litter characters, a quiz and an opportunity to share your thoughts on how you would like to see our rivers used in 10 years time. Bring the river walk spotter sheet and a walk near your local waterway can become a scavenger hunt. Look for and record items which live, grow, use and are often littered near to rivers, burns, lochs and streams.
