Water Filter Activity

Suitable for: Early Years, Primary, Secondary

Point Source Pollution is pollution that enters the environment from an easily identified place - it can come from sewage treatment works, factories and input from fish farms. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) regulates all such ‘end of pipe’ discharges.

The impact of such discharges continues to lessen with improved regulation. Yet, in 2014, point source pollution from wastewater treatment works was found to adversely affect 89 river reaches and lochs. The impacts of pollution can include loss of biodiversity, the silting of fish spawning grounds and adverse effects of human health.

You'll need:

  • Plastic bottles
  • Scissors
  • Sand
  • Filter paper
  • Rocks
  • Cotton wool
  • Polluted water sample

We are going to learn about how polluted water is filtered to make it drinkable and you will get a chance to filter your own polluted water to make it as clean as possible with very little work.

Mild: After watching the video below, your task is to create your own water filter. Why is learning about this important? Submit a picture/video showing your water filter.

Medium: After watching the video below, your task is to create your own water filter. Experiment by making 2 water filters, what happens if you do not include one of the layers? Or you add an extra layer of something?  Why is learning about this important? Submit a picture/video showing your water filter.

Extension: This water filtration system happens naturally with the help of trees and plants. What do you think would happen to the water and the soil if these trees and plants were not present? Explain in the most creative way you can think of, a poem, picture, story etc.
