Energy Investigators Activity

Suitable for: Early Years, Primary, Secondary

Did you know? The energy required for heating, lighting, and powering equipment in an ordinary school classroom releases about 4,000 kg of CO2 every year – enough to fill four hot-air balloons 10 metres in diameter. UK schools spend about £450m on energy each year, three times as much as they do on books, and about 3.5% of their budgets.

You'll need:

  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper

Optional:

  • Colouring pencils, pens or paints, phone/camera

Having a strong understanding of where we get our energy from and how to waste it is key to reducing our individual carbon emissions. It is also important to remember that this is not just an individual effort. How Scotland and all other countries choose to change to a low carbon/clean energy future is extremely important to the success of combating climate change.

Mild: Your task is to investigate how energy is produced and used in Scotland. How do you think this will change in the future? Show this through pictures/short video/drawings/music piece/poem.

Medium: Your task is to investigate how energy is produced and used in Scotland and how that compares to other countries around the world. How do you think this will change in the future? Show this through pictures/short video/drawings/music piece/poem.

Spicy: Your task is to identify and investigate the most environmentally sound country and identify the key differences in in practice between them and Scotland. How do you think this will change in the future? Show this through pictures/short video/drawings/music piece/poem.

Extension: Design your own model wind turbine. It can be created from your imagination or a design you have researched e.g. See this example. Show this through pictures/short video/drawings.
