Garioch Sports and Community Centre Holdings Mentor Profiles

The Garioch Sports Centre's purpose is to deliver sports and community services primarily for the public benefit of those residing within the Garioch area of Aberdeenshire. They are on their second CCF project and are currently working to reduce energy and travel related emissions in their community.

My career experience over the past 14 years has been focussed on the development and sustainability of golf clubs in my roles of Regional Manager, Club Development Officer and Golf Club Manager.  These roles although sport specific, involved providing leadership and support to committees in pursuit of their objectives ranging from improved governance, business planning and guidance towards relevant funding streams.  Since joining the Garioch Sports Centre I have use these transferable skills in my role of leading the Climate Challenge Fund project. I have a qualification in carbon literacy, and a Green Champion having attended workshops and courses.

The challenge of concentrating my focus of tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions has been extremely enjoyable.  Our project involved making energy efficiency improvements to the sports centre and working with our local community through workshops and events giving home energy advice in an effort to drive down domestic energy demand, and examples of lower carbon travel options.

I have been involved in 3 CCF applications, which include a successful 2nd round of funding for the centre, helping make further improvements to the building and ensuring continuity of our community engagement work in the Garioch area.  The Beaton Hall at Methlick were also successful in securing funding for new windows, LED lighting and insulation along with a community engagement aspect.

Both these successful applications were achieved through excellent communication skills along with sound working relationships.  A collaborative partnership with Home Energy Scotland was vital to the success of these projects.

Garioch Sports and Community Centre Holdings Mentor: Alan Still

I have been involved in five successful CCF applications and directly involved in two projects.

In my voluntary role as Captain at Royal Tarlair Golf Club (RTGC) I successfully applied on two occasions to the CCF. I took a hands-on role by overseeing the entire programme successfully working alongside the Project Lead.  The CCF project enabled the club to come from the brink of going under to a now sustainable community sports organisation, a far cry from that of four years ago. Reductions in utility bills, visible improvements to the fabric of the building and a community engagement programme aligned to a car sharing scheme and a carbon reduction information programme was well received and is still in place today. We had numerous site visits from sports clubs and community organisations seeking to replicate the excellent work undertaken at RTGC.

Currently I am employed by the Garioch Goes Green project as Admin/ Co-ordinator. I work alongside the Project Lead embedding the behaviour change message into the overall centre purpose of ‘health and wellbeing to the Garioch Community.’

Similar to the work undertaken at RTGC, facility improvements and engaging with various partner organisations and activity users to promote actions to combat carbon emissions, is our priority. Both projects have been hugely successful, one being predominately rural and the other a coastal settlement.

With the experiences gleaned from these projects I believe I have the perfect background to mentor community organisations to increase the energy efficiency of homes and community buildings.

Areas of experience:

Home energy advice; community building refurbishment; active travel; car clubs/car sharing; repair/refurbishment; renewable energy

I was involved in the Royal Tarlair Golf Club Turbine project which gives the club financial security for 25 years and a yearly Community Fund of £3,200 for groups to apply for. I set up a team and applied successfully for CARES funding for a Feasibility Study to see what Solars are a best fit for the Garioch Sports Centre
