Ideas and Resources for Your Community Event

We want you to feel confident that you can provide up-to-date guidance and advice for those around you wanting to take action on climate change. Our national partners are here to help with ideas, activities and resources on green topics for your events. Contact the Climate Festival team for more information and contact details for the partners: climatefestivalscot@keepscotlandbeautiful.org.

Arts & Culture 

Creative Carbon Scotland

Creative Carbon Scotland work to harness the role of cultural and creative industries in achieving transformational change towards a sustainable Scotland. They have a range of resources available for greening cultural organisations and events on their website.

Communities

Eco-Congregations Scotland

Eco-Congregations Scotland is a Christian environmental charity addressing climate change and conservation. They can connect event organisers to groups in their local area in order to support event coordination (volunteers, venues).

Scottish Communities CAN

Scottish Communities Climate Action Network is a volunteer run, Scotland-wide network, working to support community-led climate action addressing the climate and nature emergency and the Just Transition. Visit their Resources page to view their members map, online workshop videos and guidance on climate change communication.

Energy

Community Energy Scotland

Community Energy Scotland is a charity that provides practical help for communities in green energy development and energy conservation. They can connect event organisers to community groups who can provide speakers. Staff members may be able to speak if they are based in the local area. You can find their community resources on their website.

Home Energy Scotland

Home Energy Scotland is managed by the Energy Savings Trust and funded by Scottish Government. They help people in Scotland create warmer homes, reduce their energy bills, and lower their carbon footprint. They have workshop materials available on energy efficiency, water saving, love food; hate waste, sustainable transport and discovering renewables. They can tailor workshop content on request.

Scottish Water

Scottish Water is a public body who look after all things water in Scotland. Home Energy Scotland deliver their resources: workshops, water efficiency packs for events (digital brochures and videos, including accessible and sign language), water saving services and the Water Fit platform.

Nature & Biodiversity

Scottish Wildlife Trust

Scottish Wildlife Trust  has worked with its members, partners and supporters in pursuit of its vision of healthy, resilient ecosystems across Scotland’s land and seas for over 50 years. They have a range of resources on offer to groups, from their Learning Zone, to how-to wildlife recording. They also have a network of local groups you can connect to in order to collaborate on events.

Travel

Cycling Scotland

Cycling Scotland is funded by Transport for Scotland and works to create an environment where everyone can cycle safely and easily. They work across communities, educational institutions, employers, health & social services, retailers and social housing. They run a large network of cycle training groups, and have resources available to support you starting your own group. Cycling Scotland can provide links to existing groups, knowledge & skills training, and small awards and grant funding for cycling infrastructure or running events.

Cycling UK

Cycling UK is a UK-wide organisation. They have a map of their cycling groups on their website and connect event organisers to local groups. They also have a small grant fund of up to £800, and most excitingly, can bring a fleet of bikes to any location in Scotland!

Sustrans 

Sustrans is the charity making it easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle. In Scotland, they support groups to implement active travel projects in the workplace, at schools and transport interchanges. They have resources on encouraging active travel on their site and a wide range of partners. Sustrans can support you delivering events in your community, from Doctor Bike sessions, maintenance classes to guided rides and kit sales. Please contact the Climate Festival team if you wish to know more. Sustrans also have two funds, the ArtRoots fund and Love your Network fund for groups that live near the National Cycle Network and want to hold events, install artwork or make network improvements.

Waste 

Circular Economies Scotland

Circular Economies Scotland are a charity encouraging reuse, repair and recycling in communities. They can connect communities with local member groups to provide speakers for events, their member map is available on their website.

Zero Waste Scotland

Zero Waste Scotland is a Scottish Government body working on waste, consumption, responsible production, circular economy. They run a range of campaigns and have resources (such as presentations) to share with groups. They have an employee who is happy to give talks at Climate Festival events, as requested by community groups.

Help Clean Up Scotland

We can all do our bit to help Clean Up Scotland. Whether you are an individual, member of a community or a school, find out how you can help tackle litter. We have pulled together a Clean Up Scotland supporters pack which highlights a list of things you can do as an individual or community group to tackle litter in your community.

 

Climate and Nature Friendly Activities

Ensure your activities are ‘climate and nature friendly’, whether that be creating your own compost, planting for pollinators, litter picking, collecting rainwater, encouraging people to walk or cycle to your site, protecting and enhancing your ‘green and blue’ spaces such as your parks and beaches, or by sharing recipes and encouraging people to grow their own. One Planet Picnic

Make environmentally-friendly food and drink choices for your events!. Look at the step-by-step guide for inspiration and ideas. Register your One Planet Picnic to receive a support pack.

 

Upstream Battle

Upstream Battle works to tackle litter and waste across Scotland. You can get involved in their citizen science initiative and read about their work with schools and anchor groups.

 

Community Climate Action Plans

The Community Climate Action Plans project is a free package of support to help several communities across Scotland to develop their own Community Climate Action Plan. Workshop resources from this project can be shared with community groups interested in running similar events, or you can apply to be on the project itself!
