Alford Primary Oatcakes
Alford Primary pupils made oatcakes using this recipe for their One Planet Picnic.
Oatcakes can be rough or fine, hard or chewy – how do you like yours? Try them with soup or a drop of local honey perhaps.
Well adapted to growing in a cool climate, oats can germinate in cold ground and were once the staple grain of Scotland.

Kirn Primary Cregg Sandwiches
Kirn Primary school pupils rediscover how tasty eggs can be. YUM.
Eggs are a food found almost all over the world, and there are many references to eggs in sayings and literature. Which ones can you think of?
Most of us can recognise a hen’s egg, but there is much to discover about the humble egg. Why is an egg egg-shaped? What is candling? Have a go at some of the eggy experiments here: http://www.science-sparks.com/2013/02/16/10-egg-science-experiments/
And of course there’s lots of science in cooking an egg: http://www.exploratorium.edu/cooking/eggs/

Lochside Primary Raspberry Meringue Nests
Pupils at Lochside Primary in Angus made use of our fabulous Scottish raspberries.
Sometimes called Scotland’s superberry, they thrive here, where long daylight hours help them to ripen with plenty of flavour. In the 1950s Scottish raspberries were rushed to London markets on a steam strain called the Raspberry Special.

New Friends Nursery School
Children at New Friends Nursery recorded the ingredients for their recipe for One Planet Picnic vegetable soup.
A wide range of fruit and vegetables can grow in Scotland, and are ready to harvest at different times of the year. When a crop is ready to harvest, it is in season. It often tastes best in season and may be cheaper too. Here’s a handy guide to what fruit and vegetables are in season when http://eatseasonably.co.uk/what-to-eat-now/calendar/.
If you’re after some great eco-grub have a look at the Scottish Food Guide; an ethical and independent web guide from Wendy Barrie http://www.scottishfoodguide.scot/

Noblehill Primary School menu
Noblehill Primary School had a delicious menu full of fabulous locally produced ingredients.
Crab apples don’t grow in the sea. They grow on deciduous, broadleaf trees, and are very small, very sour wee apples. They are not good to eat raw, but crab apple jelly is delicious. It has been a popular food for a very long time. Crab apples were found in a Bronze age coffin.

St.Matthews Academy Menu
St. Matthews Academy had a wonderful One Planet Picnic. What a menu! A lot of the food at the picnic was made by hospitality students in the HE department using some recipes from their Want Not Waste Not cookery book.
Pupils requested ingredients from local companies and received generous donations from Dunlop Cheese Company and Fencebay Smokehouse.
They reduced food and waste packaging by using reusable crockery and cutlery and only food waste was put in the bin. They thought about using portion size to reduce food waste. Bite-sized pieces were served so people could try different things and if they liked it they could go back up for more. They even advertised for unwanted teddy bears to re-home.
Everyone tried and sampled different foods. Pupils mixed with staff and hospitality students who served the food and took part in an eco quiz at their One Planet Picnic.
VEGAN TIFFIN
Pupils at St. Matthews Academy made this vegan tiffin for their One Planet Picnic. A vegan diet is an entirely plant based diet.
It might be fun to investigate vegan versions of dishes. How would the tastes, mouth feel and appearance change? Which do you prefer? What is your favourite vegan dish?
