International Connections at 2016 Eco-Schools Event

Representatives from 54 countries are meeting this week in Johannesburg at the annual Eco-Schools National Operators Meeting.

This year's theme is the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their links to the Foundation for Environmental Education and the international Eco-Schools programme.  The Wrigley Litter Less Campaign is also on the agenda, along with effective data gathering, and visits to local schools.

Our hosts this year are the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) who in 2016, celebrate 90 years of enabling individuals and organisations to use natural resources sustainably.

The Eco-Schools programme in South Africa currently reaches over 400,000 learners and 16,000 educators in all nine provinces. In March 2015 the programme earned WESSA and the National Department of Water and Sanitation a United Nations Water for Life Award in the Best Practices category for a joint project involving Eco‐Schools. This same project received the Gold Award in the Water Conservation category at the 2015/16 Enviropaedia Eco-Logic Awards in April 2016.

We look forward to sharing the accomplishments of Scottish schools in the Eco-Schools programme with our international colleagues.  Follow the meeting on Twitter, on Facebook and on Instagram.
