Call out for climate ready classrooms
We're inviting people to sign up to take part in our Climate Ready Classrooms initiative to develop an understanding of climate change and providing them with the skills to help address the climate emergency.
As part of the Scottish Government’s commitment to make Scotland carbon neutral, we are offering schools across Scotland the opportunity to be amongst the first to sign up to the programme.
Climate Ready Classrooms provides a unique and timely opportunity to support young peoples’ call for climate action and work in partnership with their schools and communities to act on climate change.
Pupils participate in a 1-day Climate Ready Classroom workshop while teachers take part in a ‘train-the-trainer’ workshop - helping them to deliver the programme in their own school. Every school that registers interest can put forward a group of up to 25 pupils and members of staff.
Education Secretary John Swinney said: “Young people are increasingly calling for urgent action to respond to the global climate emergency – action which we all need to take.
“Supporting this initiative is hugely important as it aims to enhance the existing opportunities for young people to learn more about climate change in the classroom. Learning to live sustainably is an entitlement for our learners, and so I would encourage schools to take up this opportunity.”
Climate Ready Classrooms is being rolled out to schools across Scotland. The programme aims to reach at least 50% of Scotland’s secondary schools in the next two years and ensure almost 5,000 young people receive carbon literacy accreditation, through The Carbon Literacy Project.
Our Operations Director, Catherine Gee, commented: “I hope that many schools will sign up to take part in Climate Ready Classrooms. The initiative will help to provide teachers and pupils with the confidence and tools to make small changes in their everyday lives.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge that we face on a global scale and it is essential that our young people have the knowledge and skills to make informed choices on how their lifestyles can help to address the climate emergency.”
