Scottish Parliament Sustainability Award

The Scottish Parliament has won ‘Most Sustainable Public Sector Organisation in Government’ at the Public Sector Energy and Sustainability Awards 2016.

The Award was presented to Environmental Performance Manager Victoria Barby from Lord Beresford at the Energy and Environment conference in London. A case study detailing the Parliament’s environmental approach is available online.

The Parliament also recently became the first parliament in the world to achieve the Carbon Trust Triple Standard.

The Scottish Parliament Corporate Body (SPCB) has made a commitment to continuous improvement of its environmental performance and has established an Environmental Management System (EMS) compliant with the international standard ISO 14001:2004. The SPCB has been certified to the standard since 2007.

The Parliament’s second carbon management plan, approved in 2013, commits to a reduction in carbon footprint by at least 34% by 2016 from a 2005/06 baseline. This will deliver a reduction in carbon emissions of 1300 tonnes of carbon dioxide and annual savings of £245,000 per annum. The long-term target is to reduce the Parliament’s footprint by 42% by 2020.
