New chapter for the Sustainable Scotland Network

Since 2002 we have managed and developed the Sustainable Scotland Network on behalf of the Scottish Government, growing it from a fledgling support network for local authority sustainability professionals to one of the largest of its kind for the public sector.

Later this Spring, the Sustainable Scotland Network (SSN) will begin a new chapter when the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation ECCI, in partnership with Sniffer, will start to deliver the Scottish Government contract to provide the secretariat service.

ECCI and Sniffer have proposed an ambitious approach to developing the network and will help connect climate change action being taken across Scotland’s public sector with a wider audience of decision makers. The aim is to enhance and grow the strong capacity building, training, knowledge exchange and peer-to-peer opportunities offered by the SSN while adding value by connecting the Network to innovative and untapped partners and channels.

Our existing staff team is working closely with the SSN Chair, and members of the SSN Steering Group, alongside the Scottish Government, ECCI and Sniffer to ensure continuity of service to SSN members.

Derek Robertson, CEO at Keep Scotland Beautiful commented, "We are proud to have provided the secretariat for the Sustainable Scotland Network for the past 15 years. During this time, we have, with support from the Scottish Government, a dedicated Steering Group, and excellent staff team, seen the Network grow to become the largest of its kind.  In recent years we have also been delighted to facilitate and support Scotland’s 180 public bodies to report against their climate change duties under the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.

“Scotland is well placed to continue leading the way internationally to become a low carbon society, and the public sector has a key role to play.  We will continue to support the Scottish Government’s ambitions and to develop further climate change innovations to support others to take action.  We look forward to supporting the work of the Network as it begins a new chapter with Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation and Sniffer."

ECCI Executive Director Andy Kerr says: "ECCI is delighted to be appointed to the secretariat for the SSN. Our proposal is based on leveraging the incredible success of the reporting (100% last year) to develop the opportunity for leadership on climate action. We are very grateful to our colleagues at Keep Scotland Beautiful for the hard work and stewardship of the Network over recent years and we will work closely with them to ensure a smooth transition for members. Our first order of action will be to meet and hear from the steering group, followed by wider engagement and conversations with the whole Network to help inform the vision and development of the SSN."

Ruth Wolstenholme, Managing Director of Sniffer says: "Sniffer welcomes this opportunity to strengthen our existing relationship with ECCI and in particular to contribute to the capacity building element of the network. This closely aligns with our role supporting the public sector through the delivery of the Adaptation Scotland programme."
