ArtRoots fund offers community groups chance to make National Cycle Network improvements

Community groups across Scotland are being given the opportunity to apply for up to £5,000 in funding towards artistic and visual improvements to their local National Cycle Network routes.

The ArtRoots fund, funded by Transport Scotland and delivered by Sustrans Scotland, seeks to empower communities in creating and implementing improvements to make journeys on the National Cycle Network more attractive and enjoyable.

The fund supports local enterprise and culture, and aims to encourage community groups to participate in shaping their local environment and increase their levels of physical activity.

Throughout 2018, ArtRoots funding enabled East Haven Together to celebrate the maritime heritage of their village through installation of a striking chainsaw-carved redwood bench along National Cycle Network Route 1, empowered the Scott Avenue Community Garden Group to create a new community focal point in Bowling, and encouraged young people from Craigmillar to explore the possibilities of the National Cycle Network in their area through circus workshops and a glow parade

Wendy Murray of community group East Haven Together said: “The chainsaw sculpture in East Haven has attracted enormous interest and an increase in visitor numbers. People now travel just to have their photograph taken with the artwork.

“The National Cycle Network provides an opportunity to showcase the very best communities have to offer, and residents should exploit this to the full.

“Sustrans Scotland are able to offer lots of ideas and suggestions about actions for those interested in making the most of this amazing facility through the ArtRoots fund.”

Community groups throughout Scotland who would like to benefit from funding of up to £5000 are encouraged to submit an online expression of interest form through the Sustrans website, where more details and guidelines for applications are also available.

If you have any questions about the fund, please get in touch with Cosmo Blake at cosmo.blake@sustrans.org.uk.
