A growing legacy in Spean Bridge

Prize winning entry by Spean Bridge Primary harvested from polytunnel and raised beds

Congratulations to Spean Bridge Primary, who won First Prize in the School Category of the Lochaber Agricultural Show, for a wonderful display of fresh vegetables harvested from their polytunnel and raised beds.

The polytunnel and raised beds are a legacy of a partnership with Spean Bridge Community Centre, who were awarded a grant from the Scottish Government's Climate Challenge Fund (CCF) in 2016, for a number of activities that included increasing local food growing.

Spean Bridge Community Centre continue to work with Spean Bridge Primary as part of their currently funded CCF activities for the Sustainable Spean Bridge project, which is supporting the community move towards a more sustainable and low carbon lifestyle. Elements of the project include increasing local food production, a continued reduction in food waste, lowering of domestic energy consumption and promotion of greener transport and travel.

You can find out more about Spean Bridge Community Centre and their Sustainable Spean Bridge CCF activities through their Facebook Page

The next CCF event organised by Sustainable Spean Bridge is a practical Bread and Jam Workshop on 11 September at the Lochaber Rural Education Trust. At the workshop you can learn how to make your own bread and how use local, organic, garden fruit to make jam. To book a place on this free workshop, please contact Lochaber Rural Education Trust, Tel 01397 708642 info@lret.org
