Renfrewshire Taxi drivers to give litter a lift

Taxi drivers across Renfrewshire are backing our campaign to prevent roadside litter harming the local environment.

Paisley Taxis and Renfrewshire Cabs have shown their support for our Roadside Litter campaign by pledging that their drivers will give their litter a lift and take it home.

Drivers have been provided with car litter bags to keep their own and customers litter until they reach a bin. Additionally, air fresheners will advertise the campaign to their passengers.

Advertising on local lampposts will highlight the issue, whilst two branded funnel bins will be placed in recognised areas of vehicle littering, meaning litter can be thrown into them from a vehicle.

The move comes as part of Renfrewshire Council’s Team Up to Clean Up campaign which aims to challenge the culture of littering and inspire people to take care of their local area.

Craig Allan of Paisley Taxis added: "It's important that all of our drivers are aware of the damage to the environment that littering can do and we are encouraging all of them to use the litter bags provided to give their litter a lift home.

"We're happy to support the Team Up to Clean Up campaign and will work hard to ensure we do all we can to keep our streets free of roadside litter."

Team Up to Clean Up has seen a five-year investment to provide an increased programme of road sweeping, drain clearing in Renfrewshire and facilitating local communities to undertake clean ups within their local area.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, commented: "We're delighted that the taxi companies in Renfrewshire have shown their support for the campaign as roadside litter can be a big issue.

"People may think that one piece of litter thrown from their vehicle won't make a difference, but if everyone does it then it can cause serious damage to the local environment and also puts the road workers who have to clear it up at risk.

"It's important that people recognise how important it is to dispose of their litter correctly and I'm delighted that our taxi drivers have made this commitment."

Our Roadside Litter campaign aims to tackle the 50 tonnes of litter abandoned on Scotland’s roadsides every month by encouraging road users to give their litter a lift and take it home.

Our Campaign Officer Georgina Massouraki said, “Professional drivers were one of the target audiences for our ‘Give your litter a lift’ campaign this year, as it relates directly to their place of work: Scotland’s roads. In addition to being affected by the impacts of roadside litter, this group are often seen to contribute to the problem. Equally, they are also well-placed to model good behaviour for other drivers.

“Through positive engagement, reminders and support, we hope that we can reverse bad habits and have a significant impact in reducing the amount of litter both at taxi stands specifically and across the region’s roads. We have been delighted by the response of the Renfrewshire taxi companies and look forward to seeing the positive impacts of this initiative for everyone involved.”
