Scotland’s Green Flag Success
Today we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Green Flag Award at an online event co-hosted with Keep Britain Tidy, Keep Wales Tidy and Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. The event toasted the Top 10 UK Green Flag Award parks as voted for in the People’s Choice Award with two parks in Scotland on the list. Strathaven Park in South Lanarkshire has received a Green Flag award every year since 2013 and this is the sixth year running that it has been featured in the UK’s top ten list and Eoropie Dune Park on the Isle of Lewis also received the distinction as one of the UK’s favourites, having held Green Flag status since 2019.
Paulo Quadros, Chair of Friends of Strathaven Park, commented “Friends of Strathaven Park is delighted that our park has been voted onto the top ten UK parks list for a sixth year. Our congratulations and thanks go to the management and staff who do an excellent job in maintaining the park’s high standards. During the Covid pandemic, we feel Strathaven Park has played a key role in helping people’s mental health. The park has served as a refuge to many in allowing them to get out for recreation, or to simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. We would also like to extend our congratulations to staff and volunteers at Eoropie Park, Isle of Lewis for joining us in the UK Top 10.”
Nicola Morrison is Project Manager for Guth Airson Iarrtasan Nis (GAIN), commented "We are delighted to be recognised in the top ten parks in the UK. Our aim at Eoropie Dunes Park is to provide a safe and engaging outdoor play facility that is sympathetic to the natural machair and dune surroundings. Set in 4 acres of land near to the beautiful beach of Traigh Shanndaigh provides us with a unique green space that has been designed to educate, stimulate and entertain youngsters from pre-school age to late teenage and beyond."
Our committee members and volunteers work hard to achieve the high standards required for a Green Flag Award and to be voted for the People's Choice Award by our local community is a great achievement. We are very proud to have a Green Flag Award and grateful for the community support over the 22 years since the Park was first opened."
Along with the People’s Choice Award announcement eight further awards were presented to recognise employees, volunteers, young people, and initiatives linked to the Green Flag Award – an international benchmark for recreational outdoor space. These included the Employee of the Year award presented to both Ryan Argent, a gardener at Helix Park, Falkirk and Gordon Mason of Hyndburn Council, England after a panel of judges decided they both deserved equal recognition.
Ryan Argent, Gardener at Helix Park, commented “I am absolutely over the moon and delighted to have won this award. To be even nominated or made a finalist was already a great accomplishment but to win is just incredible. And many congratulations to my joint winner Gordon Mason. It’s an absolute pleasure to win this with you.”
Barry Fisher, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, commented: “I’m delighted that two Green Flag Award parks from Scotland have featured on the top ten list, out of over 2,000 in the UK. Every single Green Flag Award winner provides an invaluable service to the local communities that it serves - creating a safe space to play, to think, to work out – and they helped to address many of the health and wellbeing challenges we faced as a country during lockdown.”
“Good management can often go unnoticed, but it’s thanks to the incredible work of people like Ryan, the often-unsung heroes working so hard behind the scenes, that we are able to experience well managed, welcoming parks across Scotland.”
