Litter picking pensioner presented with environmental award

Cowal man recognised for commitment to clearing coast and roads

We are delighted to present Cowal man, Peter MacBride, with the Clean Up Scotland “Hero of the Month” award. The accolad recognises Peter’s commitment to keeping the Cowal coastline and roadsides clear of litter.

Peter, aged 76, has been leading a team of six people who have cleaned over 18km of coastline around Tighnabruaich over five months. Over this period, Peter has helped to organised enough help to remove more than two tonnes of plastic waste from the local environment.

Recently, Peter has also started tackling the litter left on the roadsides in the local area. Over the past few weeks he has been cleaning up 13 miles of verge around Tighnabruich.

Peter is an avid clean-up campaigner and uses social media to encourage even more local residents to support his efforts. Peter, who was nominated for the award by his daughter Heather and members of the team, commented:

“I have lived in Tighnabruaich for most of my life. It is during this time that I became even more aware of litter being present on our coastline and roadsides. I am not sure whether it is because we have more visitors, or if people are just dropping more litter. Either way it is only natural that we try to help clean it up.

“It is always great to see so many local people, young and old, taking part in the clean up activities. I really hope that people will continue to take part, but also stop dropping litter. I would like to get to a point where there is nothing left to clean up.”

Peter has inspired his daughter, Heather MacBride, to take action. Heather commented:

“My dad has inspired me to get off the couch during the grey winter months to do a little good for our environment, and joining him with his mission to clean up Scotland.

He has passed on to me his love of this beautiful countryside and his passion for keeping it clean and tidy for everyone to enjoy and to hopefully inspire the next generation to take responsibility. Dad you are a star!”

Peter was presented with the award by Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Heather McLaughlin. The Hero of the Month award is supported by The Helping Hand Company which provides each Hero with a Clean Up kit - including a new Scottish litter picker and handy hoop. Heather, one of our Community Project Officers commented:

“The effort made by Peter and his enthusiasm is fantastic. I would like to congratulate him, and all of the other local volunteers, for all of their hard work.

“It is very disappointing when we see litter spoiling the outdoor areas that we love. I hope that many more people across the country follow Peter’s lead and clean up the places that they cherish.”
