Shaping and influencing policy, March 2019

The first three months of 2019 presented us with a number of significant and exciting opportunities to continue to build on our work to shape and influence legislation, policy and practice. Here are some highlights.

Strategic engagement and working collaboratively

We endorsed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, a global commitment to ending plastic pollution. We also announced our support for the Fight for Scotland’s Nature campaign, calling for a new environmental law, a Scottish Environment Act, that is fit for purpose and able to cater to Scotland’s unique environmental needs.

We launched our Cup Movement in Glasgow - Scotland's first cup recycling and behaviour change campaign. To help implement the citizen science aspect of our ambitious Upstream Battle campaign, which is running in partnership with RECOUP to tackle litter levels along the entire length of the River Clyde we selected 16 community groups from across the Clyde Valley.

Developing and engaging with policy

We responded to three consultations and formal submissions, feeding in to the UK’s Voluntary National Review of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Good Food Nation consultation and the Scottish Charity Law consultation.

In addition to this, we developed and launched a youth consultation process to enable young people in Scotland to engage with the Good Food Nation consultation process.

Demonstrating expertise and credibility

We held a three-day exhibition at the Scottish Parliament, raising awareness of environmental inequality as a cross-cutting issue which affects all areas of policy and encouraging MSPs to take action, including through our Spring Clean 2019 campaign.

Juliette Camburn, one of our Community Projects Officers, received a Certificate of Merit for her contribution to horticulture and gardening in Scotland at the annual Caley Awards organised by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society.

These opportunities allowed us to demonstrate our expertise in a wide range of areas including climate change, the Sustainable Development Goals and food and the environment. In addition, it highlights our work around the Global Goals, particularly Goal 12: Reduced Consumption and Production, Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 17: Partnership for the Goals.
