Keep Scotland Beautiful joins Fight for Scotland's Nature campaign
The Scottish Government recently consulted on a new Environment Strategy, which seeks to develop a strategic approach on environmental policy to protect and enhance our environment, safeguard natural capital and continue Scotland’s leading role in addressing environmental challenges. Linked to this, the Scottish Government is currently consulting on Environmental Principles and Governance in Scotland, considering how we maintain effective environmental governance following an exit from the European Union. The consultation, which runs until 11th May 2019, seeks views on maintaining the role of environmental principles in developing future Scottish environmental policy and legislation and maintaining effective, appropriate and proportionate environmental governance in Scotland. With 80% of Scottish environmental protections stemming from EU legislation, it is important that these protections are maintained.
Scotland’s leading environmental charities are calling for a new environmental law, a Scottish Environment Act, that is fit for purpose and able to cater to Scotland’s unique environmental needs.
The Fight for Scotland's Nature campaign calls for a Scottish Environmental Act that will:
- Embed much needed EU environmental law principles in Scots law.
- Create an independent and well – resourced watchdog to enforce environmental protections.
- Set clear targets for environmental protection alongside adequate financial resources.
For more information, please see the campaign webpage. To put forward your views on protecting Scotland’s environment, respond to the consultation on Environmental Principles and Governance in Scotland.
