Where’s your favourite open space?
The public vote will select the People’s Choice Award for being one of the 10 best parks and open spaces from across the UK. Last year, Strathaven Park in South Lanarkshire was successful in making it into the UK’s top 10 for the fourth time in five years, and was awarded the accolade of “Scotland’s favourite park”. This year, parks from Aberdeen to Dumfries & Galloway, from Edinburgh and Glasgow and across the whole of Scotland will be asking locals to speak out on their behalf.
The public vote is now open at the Green Flag Award website, and closes on 30th September. The People’s Choice top 10 will be announced on October 16th.
The Green Flag Award for parks is the national standard for parks and recognises well managed, high quality sites with community involvement. Research has shown the significant benefits to physical and mental health, as well as the economic and social advantages to communities in having thriving local open spaces.
Derek Robertson, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, said:
“Scotland is home to some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in the UK. The high number of Green Flag Award winners in 2018 is testament the hard work of park managers, local authorities and community volunteers.
“The People’s Choice prize is a good opportunity to celebrate their achievements - show your appreciation for the enjoyment you’ve had in your local park this year by voting for it and helping Scotland to maintain its success in recent years. Now’s the time for Scotland to stand up for prized local open spaces!”
Heather McLaughlin, Green Flag Award Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful added:
“This year, 71 Scottish parks and green spaces met the tough standards demanded by our Green Flag Award Judges but we want to know which parks the public love the most.
“The People’s Choice Award is a chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. If it’s worth shouting about, make your voice heard and vote now.”
Almost 1,900 parks, cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens from across the United Kingdom achieved a Green Flag Award in 2018 and will be competing for pole position.
The 2018 Scottish award winners list was boosted this year by the arrival of several park entries which have never received the award before - Fairmilehead Park and Lauriston Castle Park in Edinburgh, Slessor Gardens in Dundee, Victoria Park in Aberdeen, and Breadalbane Park and Causewayhead Park in Stirling, which received one of the Community Green Flag Awards
Last year’s top 10 People’s Choice winners were:
Arlington Square Gardens
Millennium Country Park
