Strathaven Park retains top spot for fourth year running

Public vote sees Strathaven Park remain the only Scottish park in the UK's top 10.

We are delighted to confirmed that Strathaven Park in South Lanarkshire has reached the top ten in a nationwide poll of the country’s best green spaces - retaining its title as Scotland’s best park for the fourth year running.

After expert judges awarded 71 parks in Scotland, and almost 2,000 in the UK, the coveted Green Flag earlier this year, over 45,000 members of the public have been voting to select which of the Green Flag parks they felt were truly the best.

Strathaven Park has held its Green Flag award since 2013. Strathaven is the only Scottish park to consistently reach the top ten since 2016.

All Green Flag Award-winning parks and green spaces are entered into the annual People’s Choice Award vote, which every year sees countrywide mass public involvement in voting for the very best.

Tricia Summers, Chair of Friends of Strathaven Park commented: “Friends of Strathaven Park think this news is fantastic! Our park is a source of enjoyment and pride for local residents. It’s so well used by local groups for physical activities and environmental education. Strathaven Park also welcomes many visitors for special events like Gala Day, Fireworks night and the Balloon Festival.”Cemeteries, universities, shopping centres and community gardens across the United Kingdom all achieved a Green Flag Award in 2019. In July, expert judges awarded the coveted Green Flag award to 71 parks and open spaces across Scotland, a full list of Scotland’s parks can be accessed here.

Katie Murray, our Communities and Place Manager, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone that continues to contribute to the success of Strathaven Park. This award goes a long way in helping to demonstrate how, when working together, councils and communities can help to deliver beautiful outdoor spaces. In fact, some of the best in the UK.

“We are very proud of Scotland’s Green Flag Award parks. Every single Green Flag demonstrates the commitment and effort of everyone involved to help protect and improve outdoor spaces across the country. Helping to provide cleaner and greener places to live, work and play.”
