South Lanarkshire park voted best in Scotland

Strathaven Park included in the UK’s top 10 second year running.

We're delighted to announce that Strathaven Park in South Lanarkshire has secured its place in the top ten in a nationwide poll on the country’s best green spaces. This is the second year running that the park, one of 73 Green Flag Award parks in Scotland, has achieved this recognition.

With competition from over 1,799 of the UK’s best parks, Strathaven Park was presented with the honour of Scotland’s top park at the People’s Choice Award, supported by the Green Flag Award scheme. Parks are compared against criteria that involves deciding whether they are welcoming, safe, well-maintained and secure.

All Scottish parks that achieve a Green Flag award are included in the vote at the annual People’s Choice Award, which each year enjoys countrywide involvement in voting for the best park.

Tricia Summers, Chair, Friends of Strathaven Park Group, said:

"Friends of Strathaven Park group are really excited to hear that Strathaven Park has been voted No. 1 in Scotland and one of  the UK's top 10 parks in the KSB People's Choice 2017 award. We would like to pay tribute to the enthusiasm and involvement of our local community and to the hard work and dedication of Strathaven Park staff."

Alistair Mckinnon, Head of Facilities, Waste and Ground Services at South Lanarkshire Council, said:

“The recognition is testament to all those who work tirelessly to keep the park at the level of quality that we have become accustomed to but which we should never take for granted, and to the many visitors who enjoy its facilities while also taking care of them and appreciating them.”

Derek Robertson, Chief Executive of Keep Scotland Beautiful, commented:

“We are very proud of Scotland’s Green Flag Award parks. Year on year the number of Green Flag Award flags flown in Scotland continues to rise. This is clearly recognition for everyone’s efforts in helping to make their local open space a greener, cleaner and healthier place to live, work and play.”

If you would like to sign up your local park in the Green Flag Awards in 2018, more information can be found here.
